Myeloproliferative neoplasms (MPNs) are a group of rare blood cancers that affect the bone marrow, which is the spongy tissue inside bones where blood cells are produced. In MPNs, the bone marrow produces too many of one or more types of blood cells, such as red blood cells, white blood cells, or platelets. This overproduction can cause the blood to thicken and lead to complications such as blood clots, bleeding, and an enlarged spleen.
There are several types of MPNs, including:
- Polycythemia vera (PV), which causes the overproduction of red blood cells
- Essential thrombocythemia (ET), which causes the overproduction of platelets
- Primary myelofibrosis (PMF), which causes the bone marrow to be replaced by scar tissue and leads to a decrease in the production of blood cells
MPNs are typically diagnosed through blood tests, bone marrow biopsies, and imaging tests. Treatment options may include medications to control blood cell production, blood thinners to prevent blood clots, and stem cell transplants in advanced cases.
MPNs R Us is a supportive community for individuals who have been diagnosed with a myeloproliferative neoplasm (MPN), including Polycythemia Vera (PV), Essential Thrombocythemia (ET), and Myelofibrosis (MF). Please note we are only here to offer support not give medical advise. If you need medical advise, please contact a licensed, medical doctor.
Please feel free to join us at our private and secure Facebook group called "MPNs R Us" and our Facebook Page- "I have an MPN" to connect, share experiences, and exchange valuable information. You are not alone in this journey.
